| Assessing employees development
needs is a critical aspect of continually improving a companys most important asset
its people. Some needs will naturally emerge
from evaluating their performance on the job and others may be defined from the
companys appraisal process.
An additional, and even more powerful, way of determining
training needs is through the employment of assessment techniques packaged together into a
Development Programme.
These techniques include activities and tests designed so
that the candidates can exhibit the levels to which they possess the desired behaviours
and skills. Fully experienced observers together with the client would view each activity
and rate the performances of the delegates against the agreed behaviours. These
performances would be supported by the output from psychometric tests, which would
evaluate numerical and verbal communication abilities and a range of personality
characteristics. Each delegate's performances in these tests can then be compared to
existing control groups in comparable positions to assess where each would rank compared
to the norm within the population.
Delegates can be fully involved in determining and agreeing
both their strengths and development needs by post activity counselling and a detailed
report of these is prepared for later face to face feedback.
For each delegate a development needs analysis would be
produced that can, if required, be converted into a training programme employing company
courses, if available, coaching and counselling, external training and self help.
An important part of a Development Programme is the
monitoring of delegates performances. KHA offers a mentoring service to achieve this.
Utilising delegate prepared reports, questionnaires, counselling and meetings the assigned
mentor would report to both the delegate and the company on the progress achieved and
would recommend additions and amendments as circumstances require.
Equally appropriate for selection for promotion,
Development Centres enable a consistency of approach and standards, can be highly
motivational to participants and provide an evaluation of performance which can be used as
a measuring tool to assess progress. |
